## The counters

- **State of the art: Claude Fable 5.1** (last changed on September 1 2026). Claude Fable 5.1, first on the Artificial Analysis index at 53 on version 4.3.2, in force since 19 September: v4.3 took effect on the 7th, v4.2 on the 4th and lasted three days with the leader at 57, and on v4.1.1 the leader scored 66. The ruler has been retouched twice in twelve days without moving anyone. The name at the top has not changed since 1 September, but the lead is now a tie: GPT-6 Astra also scores 53, and at $3.26 per task against $7.63. On Epoch's ECI index, which measures something else, Astra is first
- **How much less intelligence costs, at equal level, than a year ago: ×31.** running the same benchmark suite cost $789 with GPT-5 in August 2025; it costs $25 today with MiMo-V2.5. Measured on the real cost of running the full Artificial Analysis index, not on list price: list price would say 45 times, but it rewards verbose models. Caveat as of 7 September: on 4 September the index moved to version 4.2, and neither GPT-5 nor MiMo-V2.5 has been re-run on it. The $789 and the $25 are therefore the v4.1.1 pair, and can no longer be reconstructed from what Artificial Analysis publishes today: the counter is frozen at its 3 September reading and will be refounded when the two costs are comparable again. Update of 12 September: v4.2 was itself retired on 7 September, after three days of life, and replaced by v4.3. GPT-5 still has no published cost, its score has fallen to 23 and is declared an estimate on a model declared deprecated; MiMo-V2.5 does have a cost, $42.61 for the full index, but it is comparable with nothing. Exactly one end of the ratio is therefore still missing. The leader costs $13,128.86 to run the full index today, against $10,816 on v4.2.

## The month

The counter at the top of this page reads six days since the last change in the state of the art, and Claude Fable 5.1 has held first place since 1 September. But the week closing today did something stranger than change the record: it changed the ruler. On 4 September Artificial Analysis moved to version 4.2 of its index, withdrew GPQA Diamond as saturated — the test the frontier was measured on a year ago, where the leader scored 87.7% — and raised the weight of held-out private test sets from about a fifth to two fifths, adding an agentic knowledge-work benchmark and a reasoning test over 4,592 pages of PDF. The leader went from 66 to 57 without changing a line of model. Who holds the crown, meanwhile, depends on whom you ask: GPT-6 Astra, released on 3 September, is third at 55 on Artificial Analysis; on Epoch's index, which Fable 5.1 has not yet entered, the leader is Claude Opus 5; on LMArena the top three sit within each other's margin of error. And then, after the densest forty-eight hours of the year — Fable 5.1 on the 1st, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Muse Spark 1.3 on the 2nd, Astra on the 3rd — four days of silence: between 4 and 7 September no frontier lab shipped a new model, checked against Hugging Face's API and every first-tier organisation. It is an honest zero, and in a normally dense feed that says something too.

The fact of the week, though, is not a model, it is a spreadsheet. On 6 September OpenAI published its own internal figures on agent use in research: by mid-August the organisation was consuming 3.1 eight-hour agent-workdays for every workday of human labour, and before June that ratio was still below one. The median researcher burns more than $600 a day of inference at list prices, the ninetieth percentile more than seven thousand; in the first week of January it was zero and $1.95. Two things have to be held together. The first is that the metric measures machine time and not work delivered — concurrent sessions and subagents add up, and more than half of the successful four-to-eight-hour tasks of the last six months required at least one human intervention. The second is that all of it is self-reported: no third party has seen the data, and OpenAI is measuring OpenAI with OpenAI's tools. The same day, an hour earlier, the same company's chief scientist published an essay saying no lab has solved alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling responsibly at maximum speed much longer, and calling for safety bars to become mandatory and externally enforced. The two do not cancel each other, but the tension is stated and it stays there. The same report also yields the most useful number for anyone arguing about slowing down: when the cyber restrictions of 7 August took 59.2% of Astra's GPUs away, 85% of that cut reappeared on other models within a week, and the total did not move.

On the cost of intelligence, this week the counter itself broke. The 4 September index rewrite severed both ends of the ×N ratio: neither GPT-5 nor the model paired with it has been re-run on the new version, so the $789 and the $25 belong to a retired version and can no longer be reconstructed. The counter is frozen at its 3 September reading and will be refounded when the two costs are comparable again: it is said plainly in the note, because a number the reader cannot check is worth nothing. What can still be measured well is the floor, and it keeps falling: a million cached input tokens today cost $0.0028 on an open-weights model that sits above the frontier of twelve months ago, forty-five times less than the $0.125 GPT-5 cost in August 2025. And where the money goes can be measured well too. On OpenRouter, over the thirty days to 6 September, Anthropic moves 5.6% of the tokens and takes at least 29.5% of the spend, while the most-used model costs sixty-three times less per task than the index leader: the traffic sits mid-table, the money at the top. The rest is where it was: capital expenditure at the four largest cloud operators is running on 2026 guidance of $720-745 billion against $410 billion in 2025, Anthropic's annualised revenue stands at $65 billion against OpenAI's $40 billion, and neither figure has ever been published by the companies in a document of their own. On EDGAR, as of 7 September, there is still no registrant named Anthropic PBC: it is the second expected date for the prospectus to pass empty.

### The dashboard

- **17.4 hours** — length of tasks completed unaided, half the time. it was 3.4 hours for GPT-5 in August 2025 — 203 minutes exactly on the scale METR revised in January, with a range of 113 to 406. The 17.4 belongs to Claude Mythos Preview, published on 8 May, and its confidence interval runs from 8.5 to 55 hours: in the same line METR warns that its task suite is not reliable above 16 hours, meaning this board's headline figure sits beyond the declared limit of the instrument that produced it. It has not moved since: as of 7 September no later model has entered the series — not Claude Opus 5, not Fable 5 or 5.1, not GPT-6 Astra — and the one subsequent measurement, for GPT-5.6 Sol on 26 June, METR expressly asks not to be treated as robust, because of the rate of cheating detected during the evaluation. It is the fastest-ageing number on this board. (source: [METR](https://metr.org/time-horizons/), data as of 2026-05-08)
- **4 months** — lag of open-weights models behind the closed frontier. it was 3 months in the October 2025 reading, over the January 2023 - October 2025 window: the gap has widened slightly. In points it is 8 of ECI, which Epoch says is «similar to the distance between GPT-5 and GPT-5.5». The figure depends on the criterion, and Epoch says so: on the stricter definition the four months would become six. It has not been updated since 29 May. (source: [Epoch AI](https://epoch.ai/data-insights/open-closed-eci-gap), data as of 2026-05-29)
- **$166B** — capital expenditure at the four largest cloud operators, in one quarter. aggregate 2026 guidance is $720-745B against $410B in 2025, +77%: every operator has raised it at least once this year, most of them twice, and the raises to $195-205B at Alphabet, about $220B at Amazon and Meta's $130B floor already sit inside that range. No new quarter has been reported between 30 June and today — the four report Q3 at the end of October — so the quarterly figure cannot have moved. The aggregate does depend on convention: the only primary source read, Microsoft's cash-flow statement, gives $35.8B of additions to property and equipment for the quarter, while trackers that include finance leases count $41B. The total above is lower than the sum those trackers reach, about $171B. (source: [trimestrali societarie (solo Microsoft da fonte primaria)](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/investor/earnings/fy-2026-q4/press-release-webcast), data as of 2026-06-30)
- **$65B** — Anthropic annualised revenue, ahead of OpenAI at $40B. it was $9B at the end of 2025 and $47B in May: seven times in seven months. The figure is from the end of July, reported on 17 August by CNBC, TechCrunch and Axios on the same day as a communication from Anthropic to its own investors. Neither company has published it in a document of its own, and OpenAI's $40B is the weaker half of the pair because it is a trajectory («is on track to generate»), not a figure stated at a date: the last number OpenAI has confirmed is still 31 March's, $2B a month. As of 7 September there is no more recent figure for either, and no registrant named Anthropic PBC appears on EDGAR: the pair will become comparable when there is a prospectus to read. (source: [CNBC, TechCrunch e Axios](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/17/anthropic-says-annualized-revenue-climbed-to-65-billion-in-july.html), data as of 2026-08-17)
- **$0.0028** — per million cached input tokens, on a model above last year's frontier. Xiaomi's MiMo-V2.5, open weights under an MIT licence, a one-million-token context, 30 index points against GPT-5's 27: above last year's frontier. GPT-5 in August 2025 cost $0.125 per million cached, forty-five times as much. The figure should be read knowing where it comes from: it is the cached-price field in the leaderboard dataset, not a number shown on the model's public page, which gives only the $0.14 input price. Anyone wanting a figure visible on the page should stop at Ling 3.0 Flash, $0.015, which is what this counter held until today. Correction of 12 September: the $0.0028 holds and is still the lowest cached price on the whole leaderboard, but the sentence justifying it does not. On version 4.3 of the index, in force since 7 September, MiMo-V2.5 scores 22 and GPT-5 scores 23: the model this counter rests on has fallen below the frontier of twelve months ago, and the 30 against 27 belonged to a retired version. The floor for a model still above that threshold is today $0.0036, on DeepSeek V4 Pro at 31 points and on MiMo-V2.5-Pro: 29% more. The counter will be refounded in the first Monday run. (source: [Artificial Analysis](https://artificialanalysis.ai/leaderboards/models), data as of 2026-09-07)
- **1M tokens** — context window, by now the standard across every frontier model. a year ago it was 200k on Claude and 400k on GPT-5, but Gemini 2.5 Pro and Claude Sonnet 4 were already at a million: the fact of these twelve months is not that the million arrived, it is that it became the floor of the frontier instead of one model's ceiling. Today it is documented across Anthropic's whole line — Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Sonnet 5, with Haiku 4.5 stopping at 200k — on Gemini 3.8 Flash, and at 1.05M on GPT-6 Astra and the whole GPT-5.6 line. The 2M uncertainty resolves, and not the way it looked: Google's documentation contains no Ultra line and no 3.5 Pro, the only Pro is 3.1, still in preview, and the largest window Google documents is one million. The largest x.ai documents is a million too, and Grok 4.6, their best model, stops at 500k. The 10M windows being advertised have no measurement showing they hold up. ### A year ago today

On 7 September 2025 the state of the art was GPT-5, released on 7 August, and Claude Opus 4.1, released on the 5th. OpenAI's flagship held 400,000 tokens of context and cost $1.25 per million in, $10 out and $0.125 cached; Opus 4.1 stopped at 200,000 tokens and cost $15 and $75, with $1.50 cached. Behind them the frontier price list read: Grok 4, released on 10 July, at $3 and $15 with 256,000 tokens; Gemini 2.5 Pro at $1.25 and $10, and already with a million tokens; o3-pro at $20 and $80. That is why today's million should not be told as an achievement of these twelve months: it was already there, on one model. What changed is that it became the floor of the frontier instead of one model's ceiling. On SWE-bench Verified the ceiling stood around 75% — 74.9% for GPT-5, 74.5% for Opus 4.1 — and on GPQA Diamond the leader was Grok 4 at 87.7%, ahead of GPT-5's 85.4% and Opus 4.1's 80.9%. That test no longer exists: on 4 September 2026 Artificial Analysis withdrew it from its index as saturated, replacing it with an agentic knowledge-work benchmark and a long-document reasoning test over 4,592 pages of PDF. On today's index, version 4.2, GPT-5 is worth 27 points against the leader's 57. METR measured at two hours and seventeen minutes the tasks GPT-5 finished unaided half the time, and at twenty-five minutes those it closed with eighty per cent reliability; about 30% of its failed attempts simply ran out of token budget, often just as it was about to deliver the answer. That measurement has to be read on another scale too, and it was something nobody could know then: on the suite METR revised in January 2026 GPT-5 is retroactively worth 203 minutes, and the highest value METR has ever recorded, unchanged since 8 May, is 1,044 minutes — seventeen hours and twenty-five. Three things happened that week that looked like different orders of business then and read together now. On 2 September the district court in Washington decided remedies in the antitrust case against Google: no divestiture of Chrome, which the Department of Justice had asked for, but a ban on exclusive default-search contracts and an obligation to share index and data with qualified competitors. On 5 September Anthropic agreed to pay at least $1.5 billion to settle the authors' class action over pirated books used in training: about three thousand dollars for each of roughly five hundred thousand works, the largest settlement in the history of American copyright. And between 2 and 5 September three open models came out that show where the other half of the field stood: Apertus, the Swiss national model, 70 billion parameters and 65,536 tokens of context, worth 1 point on the Artificial Analysis index against GPT-5's 27; Google's EmbeddingGemma, 308 million parameters, a 2,048-token window and under 200 MB of memory quantised; and Moonshot's Kimi K2-0905, a trillion parameters with 32 billion active, context doubled from 128,000 to 256,000 tokens, $0.60 and $2.50 per million, and a claimed 69.2% on SWE-bench Verified — five points below the closed frontier, at a twentieth of Opus 4.1's price. What the models still could not do, in the numbers of the time: finish unaided, with eighty per cent reliability, tasks longer than twenty-five minutes, and get past 75% on SWE-bench Verified.
